Headline: Footage Shared By Ukraine 'Shows Destruction Of Major Kakhovka Dam'

Caption: Footage shared by Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday morning (6June2023) claims to show water surging through the destroyed Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant dam. Ukraine has accused Russian forces of blowing up the major dam, which is situated in an area of the southern Ukrainian region of Kherson that is occupied by Russian troops. The dam holds back water equal to the Great Salt Lake in the US. It was built River in 1956 and in addition to powering the hydroelectric plant it provides water to the south of the country, including Crimea. Water provided by the dam is also used to cool the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Station. In a statement shared alongside the video, Zelensky said: “Russian terrorists. The destruction of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant dam only confirms for the whole world that they must be expelled from every corner of Ukrainian land. Not a single metre should be left to them, because they use every metre for terror. “It’s only Ukraine's victory that will return security. And this victory will come. The terrorists will not be able to stop Ukraine with water, missiles or anything else.” He went on to add that he had convened his country’s National Security and Defense Council. According to officials from the Kherson regional military administration, about 16,000 people are in a "critical zone” on the right bank of the river and will be swiftly evacuated. Ukrainian authorities say the situation at the Zaporizhzhia plant, which has been occupied by Russian troops since last year, is “under control”, but have raised fears that this could change if the plant’s cooling pond starts to empty.
