Headline: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky Visits Flood-Hit Kherson Region

Caption: Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky visited the flood-hit region of Kherson on Thursday (07June2023). Residents of areas of Kherson near to the Dnipro river have been forced to leave their homes as they have become inundated with flood water following the destruction of the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Plant dam upriver in the early hours of Tuesday morning. Ukrainian officials have blamed Russia, whose forces control the area of Kherson where the dam is situated, for the destruction of the dam. During his visit, Zelensky spoke with regional officials and came to the crossing through which people are evacuated from flooded areas. In a statement, he said: “In Kherson, I visited a crossing point where people are being evacuated from flooded areas. “Our task is to protect lives and help people as much as possible. I thank the rescuers and volunteers! I thank everyone involved in this work!” Members of Ukraine’s police force, military, and emergency services have been leading efforts to evacuate people - and in some cases, their beloved pets. An estimated 16,000 people in the disaster area on the right bank of the Dnipro in the Kherson region. Evacuation efforts continue, though President Zelensky has warned that in some areas they have been hampered by Russian shelling. In a previous video address to his nation, he said: “Now we need a clear and quick response from the world to what is happening. It is even impossible to establish for sure how many people in the temporarily occupied territory of Kherson region may die without rescue, without drinking water, without food, without medical care. Our military and special services are rescuing people as much as it is possible, despite the shelling.”
