Bosses at the attraction offered free admission to all active fire, police, and safety personnel, as well as retired service personnel from 8 until 11 September. On 11 September America marked the 22nd anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks on New York and Washington D.C. More than 340 firefighters and paramedics died trying to save survivors from the collapsing World Trade Center towers in New York. A similar number have subsequently died from illnesses related to the carcinogens and other pollutants they breathed in during rescue efforts. “We appreciate the work that all first responders do to keep our community safe, and especially the police and firefighters who are always quick to respond when we need them at the Zoo” said Cincinnati Zoo director Thane Maynard.
