Headline: RAW VIDEO: The Ocean Cleanup Debut Mammoth System 03 Design To Cleanse Great Pacific Garbage Patch

Caption: Environmental non-profit The Ocean Cleanup has debuted their System 03 method of harvesting plastic waste from the seas. The new system is the latest and last of three ‘Systems’ which use ships pulling giant nets to remove items from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch (GPGP). In the last week of August 2023, The Ocean Cleanup deployed System 03 in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch for the first time. Nearly three times larger than their previous technology and capable of cleaning the area of a football field every five seconds, the arrival of System 03 marks a huge leap forward in their mission to rid the oceans of plastic. The GPGP covers a massive area – three times the size of France, or twice the size of Texas – and cleaning the whole thing requires a fleet of systems. How big this fleet needs to be, and the costs of producing and operating that fleet, will depend on the size, performance, and capture efficiency of the individual systems. By increasing size, optimizing operational performance (i.e., less downtime), and increasing capture efficiency. System 03 operates on a simple principle - using bigger systems makes cleaning the ocean more economical. They have already removed hundreds of thousands of tonnes of plastic and aim to scale up to have a fleet of similar systems. System 03 isn’t just ‘the next version’ of the organisation’s cleaning technology. It’s the culmination of years of design, testing, refinement, and operation in real-world conditions. By increasing the system to mammoth proportions and enhancing performance and cost efficiency, System 03 they hope to make a real difference in cleaning up plastic from the oceans.
