Headline: RAW VIDEO: Mercedes Bringing Self-Driving Cars To U.S. Roads

Caption: Mercedes-Benz is set to make automotive history by launching its groundbreaking Drive Pilot automated driving system in the United States. The eagerly anticipated rollout is scheduled for late 2023, with a select fleet of SAE Level 3-equipped EQS Sedans to be deployed in California and Nevada under the name "DRIVE PILOT: First Class." It is the first automotive manufacturer worldwide to introduce such a system in a standard-production vehicle for U.S. customers. California and Nevada have granted certification for the use of the system on their major freeways. Mercedes-Benz intends to expand the reach of this groundbreaking technology to additional U.S. markets as regulatory frameworks evolve. Markus Schäfer, Member of the Board of Management of Mercedes‑Benz Group AG and Chief Technology Officer, says: "Safety is one of Mercedes-Benz core values. Responsible handling of this technology is our top priority and the key to acceptance among customers and in society." Dimitris Psillakis, President and CEO of Mercedes-Benz USA, described DRIVE PILOT as a "technological game changer" that aligns with the company's commitment to safety and technology, offering relief to customers during congested traffic situations. Drive Pilot represents a significant leap in conditionally automated driving. The system can take over dynamic driving tasks on suitable freeway sections, up to speeds of 40 mph and during high traffic density. It controls speed, distance, and lane-keeping, allowing drivers to focus on other tasks during conditionally automated journeys. Drive Pilot incorporates advanced sensing technology, including LiDAR, cameras, microphones for emergency vehicle detection, and a road wetness sensor. Redundancies in steering, braking actuators, and the electrical system ensure maneuverability in the event of a system failure, enhancing overall safety. The system will be available for select EQS and S-Class models, with activation options starting at $2,500 through the U.S. Mercedes me connect store. To enhance safety, Mercedes-Benz has introduced Automated Driving Marker Lights, represented by turquoise-colored lights to indicate when DRIVE PILOT is engaged. While there is currently no national regulatory framework for this technology in the U.S., discussions with various state and federal agencies are ongoing, and Mercedes-Benz remains committed to adapting technology in accordance with evolving standards.
