Headline: RAW VIDEO: Capy Thanksgiving! Giant Rodent Babies Brighten Up Holiday Season At Houston Zoo

Caption: This Thursday (23November2023), Americans celebrate Thanksgiving - and staff at Houston Zoo have an extra reason to be thankful - an adorable clutch of capybara babies. The staff are thankful for their own set of little “potatoes”, capy pups Russet, Tater Tot, Spud, and Chip - who were born last month and can be seen exploring their new home in the zoo’s South America’s Pantanal habitat. Guests can see Russet, Tater Tot, Spud, and Chip with mom Poppy, dad Rio, and their older pastry-named siblings, Biscuit, Bagel, and Strudel. This is Poppy and Rio’s second litter. Capybaras are native to Central and South America and are the largest rodent in the world. Their name means “master of the grasses.” Capybara pups are born with fur, open eyes, and a full set of teeth. They grow and learn very fast. Capybaras communicate by scent and through a variety of vocalizations including growls, whinnies, alarm barks, whistles, and a frequent guttural purr emitted by the infant. By visiting the Houston Zoo guests are saving wild capybara families in Brazil. The Zoo provides support for our Brazilian conservation partners to protect wildlife from fires and find solutions to prevent animals from being hit by cars on major roads across the region.
