Flying car firm Samson Sky has redesigned its innovative Switchblade flying car, unveiling a sleeker, more aerodynamic design.

The updated model features larger wings and a reconfigured tail design, enhancing both its aerodynamics and stability. In ground tests, the vehicle achieved a top speed of 125 mph, while wind-tunnel testing confirmed its ability to meet its cruising speed target of 160 mph in flight. The Switchblade is designed to operate at a maximum altitude of 13,000 feet.

The new design is an upgrade on the previous Switchblade, which made its maiden flight in November 2023.

Samson Sky is among a growing number of companies developing flying cars, which aim to combine the functionality of street-legal cars with aircraft, making short-distance and regional travel more efficient.

Owners will be able to park the vehicle in a standard garage, refuel with standard unleaded petrol, and drive to a local airport to take off. The car transitions from ground to flight mode in just three minutes.

Over the next 12 to 18 months, Samson Sky plans to produce three test vehicles for real-world evaluations of its fly-and-drive capabilities. Two of these will feature the new standard design, while one will be a Limited Edition (LE) model with a more exotic rear design and unique styling elements. Optional upgrades include a high-powered engine, 360-degree exterior cameras, and a smoke screen, with a customisable interior for added comfort.
The flying car is expected to retail between $179,000 and $195,000. However, as it is classified as an experimental aircraft by America's Federal Aviation Authority, owners must assemble 51% of the vehicle and obtain a pilot’s licence. Samson Sky offers an assistance programme to help customers with the build process.
