Here’s an early look at the Olympic Village where athletes will live and enjoy themselves during the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The village is poised to become the central hub for athletes and their delegations starting 18 July.
Located in the Seine-Saint-Denis department, encompassing Saint-Denis, Saint-Ouen, and L’Île-Saint-Denis, this global village is ready to host over 200 Olympic and nearly 180 Paralympic delegations, celebrating a diversity of countries, cultures, and sports.
The village features 2,800 apartments designed to house four to eight athletes each, with shared bathrooms and living spaces. Equipped with 345,000 pieces of furniture, the accommodations promise maximum comfort. Post-Games, all furnishings will be repurposed, donated, or recycled. Cleaning services will be provided every other day, and 10 resident centers, including three open 24/7, will offer support and information.
Central to the village is the Main Dining Hall in Cité du Cinéma, seating 3,200 people and catering to the nutritional needs of high-level athletes with diverse dietary requirements. A separate 600-seat world-food restaurant and food trucks will offer additional dining options. An army of 1,000 employees will prepare and serve up to 40,000 meals daily.
The 3,000 square meter Fitness Centre, open 24/7, boasts over 350 pieces of equipment and professional coaches. Eight training venues, including seven within Cité du Cinéma, are strategically placed to minimise travel time and reduce the overall carbon footprint.
A Multifaith Centre with spaces for various religious practices ensures spiritual needs are met. For relaxation, the Village Club provides an 800-square-metre entertainment area featuring a Disconnection Bubble with massage chairs, a Play Zone with arcade games, and a Social Zone with giant screens and a main bar.
A Polyclinic offering a range of medical services, including emergency care and a pharmacy, will be available. Security remains a top priority, with restricted access and multiple security checks. The Village Plaza, the only area open to accredited visitors and media, will feature a supermarket, beauty salon, family area, and a giant screen for event viewing.
Transportation within the village will include a fleet of electric vehicles, bicycles, and a specially designed Accessible People Mover (APM) by Toyota, ensuring inclusive mobility. The village’s design emphasizes environmental sustainability, achieving a 50% reduction in carbon emissions through bio-sourced materials and energy-efficient buildings.
Post-Games, the village will undergo conversion works to accommodate new residents. All family lodgings are designed to be accessible, and the site includes newly built and renovated public facilities like the Aretha Franklin primary school and the Marcel Cachin high school. Promenade areas such as Ampère Park and the Promenade Cesaria Evora will enhance the neighborhood.
Paris 2024’s Olympic and Paralympic Village stands as a testament to French innovation in sustainable and accessible construction, aiming to provide an exemplary living and training environment for the world’s best athletes while leaving a lasting legacy for the local community.
