A chubby-cheeked rat on the brink of extinction has been given a lifeline through a groundbreaking breeding program in Australia.

The conservation group Aussie Ark has successfully saved the broad-toothed rat by capturing six wild specimens to launch the breeding and rewilding initiative.

Though called a "rat," the endangered rodent has earned the nickname "pygmy wombat" from the Ark due to its guinea pig-like personality - shy and sweet - and because it is not a true rat.

The native species inhabits sub-alpine high-altitude swamps, including the Barrington Tops in New South Wales, but faces critical threats from feral predators and habitat destruction. It has already disappeared from many swamps and is on the verge of extinction in the wild.

Tim Faulkner, Aussie Ark’s managing director, emphasised the significance of their mission. “Breeding and only breeding was the measurement of our success,” he said, expressing both excitement and relief upon hearing of the babies' birth.

“Our work has helped change the destiny of this creature, from vanishing forever to having a future,” Mr. Faulkner added. “That’s powerful stuff!”

Conservation manager Hayley Shute shared her joy, saying, “It was so special having those two precious babies in my hands today. They represent hope and a future for their species.”

To minimise disturbance, Aussie Ark monitored the family using hidden cameras, which captured remarkable footage of the babies nursing, playing, and interacting with their mother.

The young rats recently underwent their first health check, confirming their excellent condition.

Looking ahead, Aussie Ark aims to breed more of these beloved "Pygmy Wombats" while working to restore their ecosystems. The goal is to clear the swamps of feral threats and eventually reintroduce the broad-toothed rats to their natural habitats.

“So this is obviously a very complex and collaborative journey,” Mr. Faulkner said. “But we’re up for the challenge!”
