An adorable resident at an Australian zoo has celebrated its first birthday.
Wombat joey Wilbur celebrated his first birthday in style, enjoying a special "smash cake" made from his favourite treats, including carrots, grass, sweet potato, and corn.
Seleena de Gelder, a zookeeper at the Australian Reptile Park and Wilbur's surrogate mother, reflected on their journey together, saying, "This day is meaningful not only for Wilbur but for our entire team. When he first arrived in September last year, his future was uncertain, but he has since blossomed into a wonderfully mischievous wombat."
Wilbur didn't hesitate as the cake was placed in front of him; he dove right in, quickly devouring the grass and taking large bites from the chunks of carrots, sweet potatoes, and corn. Between bites, he enjoyed playful chases with Seleena before succumbing to a 'food coma' after his feast.
Wilbur's journey to the park began in late September 2023, following a heartbreaking incident where he was found in the pouch of his mother, who had been fatally hit by a car. A rescuer noticed movement in the pouch and swiftly brought the five-month-old to the park for care.
Seleena, while treasuring her role as Wilbur's caregiver, expresses a deep concern for wildlife safety, particularly highlighting the dangers posed by vehicles, especially during the school holidays.
Wilbur will continue to reside at the park until he is deemed ready to live independently. During this time, visitors may see him frolicking in the Koala Preschool with other young animals. As preparations for his eventual release into the wild progress, the park remains hopeful for his future.
