Award-winning mountain biker Brage Vestavik has been mountain biking on never-before ridden mountains in Alaska.
The extreme sportsman has teamed up with Red Bull to film "Planet Alaska", inspired by the fluidity of big mountain skiing and snowboarding.
"Planet Alaska" follows Vestavik's journey through the Alaskan mountains, focusing on exploration, pushing boundaries, and discovering new lines. For Brage, the project is about freedom, embracing the unknown, and pioneering the sport.
"The whole factor of the unknown really plays a part in what I love about riding," Brage explains. "It's just that little part of not knowing and having to figure it out as you're riding. Your mind switches off, and your body just acts – it's like shutting out the rest of the world. Even though you don't know what to do, you still know exactly what to do, and it's a crazy feeling."
The film captures the vast Alaskan wilderness, where Brage takes inspiration from years of watching elite skiers and snowboarders tackle steep mountains. However, unlike snowdrifts that cushion falls, Brage faces unforgiving rocky terrain, making his feats even more daring.
"I used to ski throughout the winter," Brage recalls. "My dad had loads of old big mountain snowboard and ski movies, and I grew up watching those DVDs. Alaska was always a feature in those films – it's the pinnacle of big mountain riding. After starting freeride mountain biking, Alaska was always in the back of my mind. But it wasn’t until the last year that I realised – 'whoa, I can actually get out there.' Even now, months after being there, it feels unreal that I’ve ridden those lines."
"Planet Alaska" highlights Brage Vestavik’s unwavering dedication to his craft, celebrating the spirit of pushing limits and redefining what is possible in mountain biking.
"Big mountain riding is still a new thing for mountain bikers," Brage reflects. "We have so much to learn from how snowboarders and skiers read the terrain. What really inspires me is finding a way to move down the mountain in a flowy, smooth way – almost like water."
The project required extensive preparation, including surgery to address old injuries, focused training at Red Bull’s Athlete Performance Centre in Austria, and practice on remote mountainsides in Northern Norway. These efforts culminated in Brage confidently tackling the steep and unforgiving lines of Alaska.
"Pushing and innovating the sport has never been my motivation," Brage says. "I just want to ride what I find fun and follow what drives me. I don't even like calling it a sport. When I'm riding, I disappear into that world – it's more of an expression, really."
The Blur Media production is now available globally on Red Bull Bike's YouTube channel following its premiere in Oslo.
