A field of golden oldies to the track at Emerald Downs, a Washington State venue usually meant for horse racing to take part in their first-ever grandparents’ race on 25 June 2023. The race saw more than 20 participants battle it out over a distance of 40 yards. Grandparents who broke from the gates were allowed to run, walk, or jog towards the finish line - with some of those who set off at a strong pace taking a tumble. No injuries were reported among the fallers. Steve Butler of Everett, Washington, was crowned the inaugural Grandparents Race winner. Butler claimed to have not run a race since playing high school football in 1973.
