Finland, another nation which once touted its neutrality, also announced its bid for NATO membership last year following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Finland joined NATO on April 4, 2023. Sweden's bid was previously blocked by Turkey and Hungary. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan accuses Sweden of granting members of the Kurdistan Workers' Party asylum. But the White House says Sweden has "fulfilled the commitments they made" to Turkey regarding the issue, and their application should be approved "as soon as possible”.
