Caption: Should you exercise during your time of the month? Although physical exercise might be the last thing you want to do while you're on your period, it will likely help you feel better. Instead of curling up with junk food during your time of the month, it may be worth trying a few light exercises to relieve the symptoms that often accompany your monthly visitor. Fitness, wellness and nutrition expert Penny Weston explains that moving your body can help reduce period pains and boost your mood. ”Exercising releases endorphins which help boost your mood - so this can decrease the symptoms of PMS. Endorphins are also proven to be the body's natural painkillers, therefore exercise can help alleviate any feeling of discomfort you may have.” What exercises are best? It is usually recommended that you stick to light exercise, such as yoga or walking, as you will probably have less energy, particularly in the first couple of days. What foods should I eat? As well as incorporating light exercise into your routine, you can also slightly alter your diet when you are on your time of the month. ”Low-fat dairy products are ideal for calcium and vitamin D so try milk, cheese and low-fat Greek yogurt," Penny recommends. ”Dark-green, leafy vegetables are good sources of magnesium and I'd recommend people eat leafy greens in the run-up to their period.” To conclude, Penny states: "We all experience our periods differently, so if you know you need to take it easy and lay off exercise for a few days, then absolutely do that - listen to your body!”.
