Headline: UNCAPTIONED: Pope Francis Calls for Treaty Regulating AI

Caption: Pope Francis Calls for Treaty Regulating AI. In his World Day of Peace message, the pope called on global leaders to create a "binding international treaty" for artificial intelligence, CNN reports. According to the pontiff, "technological dictatorship" is at risk. "The unique human capacity for moral judgment and ethical decision-making is more than a complex collection of algorithms, and that capacity cannot be reduced to programming a machine, which as 'intelligent' as it may be, remains a machine." "Any number of urgent questions need to be asked. What will be the consequences, in the medium and long term, of these new digital technologies? And what impact will they have on individual lives and on societies, on international stability and peace?" Francis went on to refer to AI-controlled weapons systems as a "cause for grave ethical concern". He also warned about "interference in elections, the rise of a surveillance society" and more. "All these factors risk fueling conflicts and hindering peace.", Pope Francis, via World Day of Peace message. The pope's message comes after EU officials agreed to establish the AI Act on Dec. 9. The landmark legislation will provide a regulatory framework and address associated risks. It also prohibits harmful AI practices "considered to be a clear threat to people's safety, livelihoods and rights," CNN reports.
