Caption: A koala joey has emerged from its mother's pouch for the first time. The joey is the 100th koala to be born in this year’s breeding season at the Australian Reptile Park. He is also extra special as his mother Ash was the first koala joey to be born after the 2019-2020 Black Summer fires that devastated the country. Knowing that he comes from a strong mother who symbolises hope for the renewal and longevity of the wild koala population the newest arrival has fittingly been named ‘Phoenix’, after the Greek mythological creature. Life Sciences Manager, Hayley Shute, the Park’s resident koala whisperer, said “It was such an incredible moment. Over the past few days, we’d seen tiny little paws come out of the pouch, but nothing more. This morning, I was surprised to see that the beautiful little joey had fully emerged and was already venturing onto mum’s back!"
