Seven top tips for avoiding dry hands and feet this winter. Now we're fully in winter mode in the northern hemisphere, you might be finding your hands or feet (or both!) drying out. Our hands are usually the first to feel the effects of the seasonal change because they're always on the go and often exposed to the elements and the cold, dry air draws moisture from the skin. Air conditioning can have the same effect too. But the weather isn't the only reason behind dry skin, handwashing, certain chemicals and medical conditions can also cause it. Handwashing. ”All that soap and water can sometimes strip the hands of their natural moisture. And unlike with other areas of the body, washing our hands isn't something we can really avoid or reduce.” Products and chemicals. ”It could be something as simple as washing up liquid, detergent, hand wash, or stronger chemicals associated with working in certain environments. All these products can have an impact on the skin's protective barrier, so they could all be potential rough dry hands causes.” Medical conditions. ”One of the biggest medical causes of dry hands is eczema. Hands are one of the most common areas for a flare-up because of everything we've mentioned above, and the condition often affects the palms and backs of the hands.” To prevent dry skin on your hands, try to abide by these four rules: 1. Wear gloves while cleaning or using any other chemical products. 2. Avoid harsh, fragrance-heavy soaps, bubble baths or shower gels. 3. Wearing gloves outside. 4. Place a damp towel on a warm radiator to increase humidity. If dry feet are your issue, try to stick to these commandments: 1. Make sure your shoes are comfortable and fit properly. 2. Pat feet dry rather than rubbing them vigorously. 3. Wear soft, breathable and moisture-wicking socks. To keep your skin hydrated in general, you should drink plenty of water, take shorter showers or baths, and wash with warm water rather than hot.
