Perplexity AI Makes $34.5B Surprise Bid for Google's Chrome Browser. AI start-up Perplexity has stunned the tech world with a $34.5 billion bid to buy Google's Chrome browser. In a letter to Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai, Perplexity argued that moving Chrome to an independent operator focused on user safety would benefit the public. Industry experts, however, call the offer a publicity stunt, noting it's far below Chrome's real value and questioning whether it's even for sale. Chrome has over three billion users and remains the world's most popular browser. The bid comes as Google faces mounting antitrust pressure in the U.S., with a looming court ruling that could force a breakup of its search business. Perplexity says it would keep Google as Chrome's default search engine but give users more choice, while maintaining the open-source Chromium platform. Perplexity, valued at $18 billion in July, recently launched its own AI browser, Comet, and previously made an offer to buy TikTok's U.S. arm.
