Deadly Heatwave Sparks Wildfires Across Southern Europe. A deadly heatwave is wreaking havoc across southern Europe, with temperatures soaring above 40C and fuelling dozens of wildfires. At least three people have died, and thousands have been forced to evacuate their homes. Spain and Portugal are facing some of the highest temperatures, with Seville, Cordoba, and southern Portugal reaching 44C. In Spain, fierce winds drove flames near homes, killing an equestrian centre worker near Madrid and prompting mass evacuations in Castile and Leon and Andalusia. Nearly 1,000 soldiers and hundreds of firefighters are battling the blazes, aided by aircraft, including two sent from Morocco. France is under widespread heat alerts, with temperatures above 40C in the Rhône Valley while Greece faces over 150 wildfires, prompting evacuations on Zakynthos and in western Achaia. Turkey has contained several major fires after large-scale evacuations. Even parts of the UK are experiencing their fourth heatwave of the year, with grassfires burning in London. Scientists warn that climate change is intensifying Mediterranean summers, driving hotter, drier conditions and longer fire seasons.
