Huawei Faces US Trial Over Iran Sanctions and Trade Secrets. China’s Huawei Technologies is set to go on trial in a US federal court over allegations including sanctions violations, bank fraud and the theft of American trade secrets. The case, which dates back eight years, centres in part on accusations that Huawei concealed its business dealings in Iran from HSBC and other financial institutions. US prosecutors allege that Huawei used a Hong Kong-based company called Skycom to conduct business in Iran in violation of US sanctions. Huawei also faces accusations of conspiring to steal trade secrets from five US technology companies, as well as misleading authorities about its activities in North Korea. Prosecutors further allege that Huawei supplied surveillance equipment that helped Iranian authorities monitor protesters during the 2009 anti-government demonstrations in Tehran. Jury selection is due to begin in federal court in Brooklyn, where the company has pleaded not guilty and denies wrongdoing. The prosecution stems from the same wider dispute that led to the 2018 arrest in Canada of Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou, whose US extradition case was later dropped after she was released in 2021.
