Trump Says 'Ukraine Can't Win War' Amid Reports Of Heated Meeting With Zelensky. President Donald Trump said he doesn’t believe Ukraine can win its war against Russia, marking a sharp shift from his previous optimism about Kyiv reclaiming its territory. Speaking at the White House alongside Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Trump said: “I don’t think they will… War is a very strange thing, a lot of bad things happen.” The remarks follow reports from the Financial Times describing a tense and “shouting” exchange between Trump and Zelensky during their meeting in Washington last Friday. According to the report, Trump urged Zelensky to accept Vladimir Putin’s terms for ending the war, warning him that Russia would “destroy” Ukraine otherwise. Zelensky publicly downplayed the claims, calling the meeting “positive” and revealing plans for Ukraine to purchase 25 Patriot air defence systems. However, he acknowledged that Trump refused to approve Ukraine’s request for Tomahawk missiles, saying the U.S. president “does not want an escalation with the Russians until he meets with them.” Meanwhile, Hungarian foreign minister Peter Szijjarto said he will visit Washington on Tuesday, after Trump suggested he would soon meet Putin in Budapest. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio also spoke with Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov on Monday about implementing understandings from last week’s Trump-Putin call. French president Emmanuel Macron announced a meeting of the “coalition of the willing” in London on Friday, co-chaired by Sir Keir Starmer and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, to safeguard Ukraine’s peace deal.
