Qantas Hit with Record Fine for Illegal Worker Sackings. Australia’s biggest airline, Qantas, has been fined 90 million Australian dollars — about 59 million US — for unlawfully sacking 1,700 ground staff during the pandemic. The ruling, handed down by Federal Court Justice Michael Lee, is the largest employer penalty in Australian history. Lee said he hoped the fine would serve as a strong deterrent to other companies. The Transport Workers' Union, which brought the case, will receive 50 million dollars of the penalty. Union leaders called the judgment the end of a "David and Goliath" battle and a moment of justice for workers who lost jobs they loved. The fine comes on top of 120 million dollars in compensation Qantas already agreed to pay staff after losing a series of appeals. The airline originally argued the 2020 layoffs were necessary to survive the collapse of air travel during Covid-19.
