Gaza Ceasefire Talks Extended Despite Facing 'Difficulties'. On March 5, a Hamas official said that ceasefire negotiations will continue following two days of talks without reaching a breakthrough. Reuters reports that the talks in Cairo have been touted as the final step in reaching an extended 40-day ceasefire between Hamas and Israel. The truce would see Israeli hostages released in exchange for aid being allowed to enter the besieged Gaza. "The delegation will remain in Cairo on Tuesday for more talks, they are expected to wrap up this round later today." Hamas official, via Reuters. According to Egypt's Qahera television, the talks continue to face "difficulties". Senior Hamas official Bassem Naim said that the militant group's latest offer for a ceasefire has been presented and is now awaiting Israel's response. However, Israeli officials have countered that their own agreement was awaiting Hamas' approval. The United States, a sponsor of the talks and one of Israel's closest allies, supported Israel's assertion that the ball remains in Hamas' court. At the same time, the U.S. has called on Israel to alleviate the humanitarian disaster in Gaza, where over 30,000 Palestinians have been killed since the recent wave of fighting began. Reuters reports that much of Gaza has been completely cut off from aid, including food, and that the few remaining hospitals have seen an influx of starvation, including children.
