UK Electric Car Sales Targets Under Scrutiny Amid Industry Backlash. The UK government faces increasing opposition from car manufacturers over strict electric vehicle (EV) sales targets, citing weak consumer demand and financial strain on the industry, BBC News reports. A consultation on EV sales targets will be launched, though the government remains firm on the 2030 deadline to phase out new petrol and diesel cars. Stellantis, owner of Vauxhall, announced plans to close its Luton plant, putting 1,100 jobs at risk, partly attributing the decision to EV target rules. The Society of Motor Manufacturers & Traders (SMMT) warned that low demand for EVs, coupled with sales quotas, threatens the viability of businesses and jobs across the sector. Ford, which plans to cut 800 UK jobs, called for government-backed incentives to increase EV uptake, stating that mandates alone won’t work without strong consumer demand. Under current rules, EVs must account for 22% of car sales this year, rising to 80% by 2030, with fines of £15,000 per vehicle for failing to meet target. Manufacturers argue that the rules force them to heavily discount vehicles or subsidize competitors like Tesla and BYD, neither of which manufacture in the UK. Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds acknowledged flaws in the zero-emissions vehicle mandate, promising a fast-tracked consultation to address industry concerns. Nissan, which produces EVs in Sunderland, criticized the rules for jeopardizing UK jobs and investment, calling for regulatory flexibility, such as transferable sales credits or incentives for British-made Evs. Despite industry calls for changes, Labour has affirmed its commitment to the 2030 petrol and diesel phase-out, maintaining annual quotas as non-negotiable while exploring other adjustments.
