California Governor Newsom Signs New Online Child Safety Laws. California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed sweeping new child safety laws regulating social media platforms and AI chatbots. The measures increase tech companies' legal responsibility to protect children and ban under-16s from accessing certain "addictive" social media features. One measure, SB 1119, requires AI chatbots to verify users' ages, limit minors' exposure to inappropriate content and restrict advertising to children. The legislation, known as Adam's Law, follows lawsuits alleging AI chatbots contributed to teen suicides and other harms involving children. The law is named after California teenager Adam Raine, whose family is suing OpenAI after alleging ChatGPT conversations contributed to his death by suicide. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman backed the legislation after lawmakers clarified rules covering chatbot memory and the retention of minors' data with parental permission. Newsom criticised the federal government for failing to introduce stronger nationwide protections and called on Washington to build on California's measures. OpenAI welcomed the new law, while Meta described it as a "meaningful step" towards balancing the risks and benefits of artificial intelligence.
