Headline: UNCAPTIONED: Trump Meets TikTok CEO as Social Media Giant Fights US Ban Deadline

President-elect Donald Trump is meeting TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew as the platform fights a looming US ban, sources told CBS News. The meeting took place at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida on Monday amid ongoing scrutiny over TikTok’s links to its Chinese parent company, ByteDance. Under a new law passed earlier this year, TikTok faces a ban in the US unless ByteDance sells it by 19 January. TikTok has filed an emergency appeal with the US Supreme Court, requesting a delay to the ban to allow time for review and input from the incoming Trump administration. The US government claims TikTok poses a national security risk due to alleged ties to the Chinese state, accusations both TikTok and ByteDance strongly deny. Trump, who supported banning TikTok during his first term, now opposes the ban, arguing it would benefit Facebook, which he has accused of undermining him in the 2020 election. At a press conference, Trump expressed his support for TikTok, saying, “I have a warm spot in my heart for TikTok because I won youth by 34 points. TikTok had an impact.” Despite Trump’s comments, a majority of 18- to 29-year-old voters backed his opponent, Kamala Harris, in the November election. However, Trump gained notable ground among young voters compared to 2020. TikTok described itself in court filings as “one of the most significant speech platforms” in the US, arguing a ban would cause “immediate irreparable harm” to the company and its users. Earlier this month, a federal appeals court upheld the ban, citing bipartisan congressional action and support from multiple administrations.
