Pope Leo Needs No Further Treatment After Lung Cancer Surgery. Pope Leo XIV will not need further treatment after undergoing surgery to remove a cancerous growth from his lung, his doctors have said. Tests confirmed the 71-year-old had lung adenocarcinoma but found the cancer was localised, the Vatican said. An oncological assessment following the operation concluded that no additional treatment was necessary. The Pope was discharged from Rome's Gemelli Hospital over the weekend, four days after undergoing the 90-minute operation. Surgeons removed the lower lobe of his right lung during the procedure on October 13 after doctors discovered a nodule. Pope Leo had said before the surgery that the growth had been detected "at an early stage" and later celebrated Mass while recovering in hospital. He returned to St Peter's Square on Wednesday for his first weekly general audience since leaving hospital. The pontiff is also hoping to proceed with a planned trip to Latin America in early November following his recovery.
