Third Consecutive Chinese Defence Chief Investigated for Corruption. China’s defense minister, Admiral Dong Jun, is under investigation for corruption, making him the third consecutive official in this role to face such allegations. Dong succeeded General Li Shangfu, who was ousted after just seven months and both were appointed by President Xi Jinping. Li himself replaced Wei Fenghe, who also came under scrutiny for corruption after his retirement. This investigation is part of a broader anti-corruption campaign targeting the People’s Liberation Army. While specific allegations against Dong remain unclear, US officials believe this marks another step in Xi’s efforts to tighten control over the military. Just last week, Dong attended a regional defense meeting in Laos where he declined to meet US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin—a decision Austin called “unfortunate”.
