Microsoft Cuts China Presence as Geopolitical Tensions Rise. Microsoft is scaling back its operations in China after years of rising geopolitical tensions, regulatory restrictions and weaker business prospects. But the country’s booming artificial intelligence sector is giving the company reasons to maintain a presence, according to Reuters. The US technology giant has closed at least 15 offices in China since 2010 and considered withdrawing from the market altogether in 2023, as relations between Washington and Beijing deteriorated. China accounted for only around 1.5% of Microsoft’s global revenue in 2024, making the market increasingly difficult to justify despite the company’s long-standing presence there. Beijing’s preference for domestic software, tighter regulations and US restrictions on the export of advanced AI technology have further complicated Microsoft’s businesses. However, demand from major Chinese companies such as ByteDance, which use Microsoft’s Azure services for global operations and AI tools, has helped keep the company commercially relevant. The company has nevertheless struggled to retain some of its top AI researchers amid US export controls, with efforts to relocate engineers overseas attracting limited interest. Microsoft’s future in China therefore appears increasingly focused on helping Chinese businesses expand, rather than competing directly for the country’s domestic market.
