Reform MS Laura Anne Jones Breached Senedd Rules. Laura Anne Jones, Reform UK’s sole Senedd member, breached parliamentary rules for using a racial slur in WhatsApp. The August 2023 incident, when Jones was still a Conservative, was deemed discriminatory and damaging by the Senedd’s commissioner. Commissioner Bain found Jones didn’t challenge offensive staff language and made abusive remarks about another ex-employee. These actions violated rules against excessive personal attacks and required members to uphold conduct standards. Travel claim errors resulted from a staff member misreading her messages; Jones repaid the incorrect expenses. A former employee dismissed in early 2024 filed the complaint; the commissioner suggested resentment, which the complainant denies. The complainant said the commissioner mishandled the case and autism plus a toxic workplace limited her ability to report issues. While Jones failed to provide proper training on conduct and expenses, this was not considered intentional misconduct. The Senedd’s standards committee will decide on any disciplinary action, which may include suspension but not removal from office. Jones has expressed her frustration with report leaks and says she cannot comment fully until the official publication.
