Mercedes Rumored to Source Engines from BMW. Mercedes-Benz is reportedly in talks with rival BMW to buy four-cylinder engines for its lineup starting in 2027. The move could help fill a gap for plug-in hybrid models, using BMW’s turbocharged 2.0-liter B48 engine, known for its flexibility across compact and mid-size cars. Mercedes recently launched its own four-cylinder M252 engine in the CLA, paired with a mild-hybrid system. But it isn’t ideal for plug-in hybrids, and being built in China could lead to high tariffs for models sold in the US. A partnership with BMW might even involve a shared engine plant in the States, avoiding tariffs entirely. The rumor comes as Mercedes adjusts its lineup amid slower EV adoption. While the company had planned to go fully electric by 2030, CEO Ola Källenius confirmed that internal combustion engines will remain in production well into the 2030s.
