Mamdani Criticized By Fellow Democrats Over October 7 Statement. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has faced criticism from fellow Democrats over a statement marking three years since the October 7 Hamas attacks on Israel. Mamdani described the Hamas attack as involving "horrific war crimes" and mourned the roughly 1,200 people killed and more than 250 taken hostage. He then condemned what he called Israel's "ongoing genocide" in Gaza and criticised continued U.S. military support for Israel. Democratic Representatives Debbie Wasserman Schultz and Josh Gottheimer accused Mamdani of disrespecting victims and shifting blame following the October 7 attacks. Representative Daniel Goldman called the statement "reprehensible", arguing that Mamdani had used a day of mourning to promote disputed allegations against Israel. Democratic nominee Brad Lander said people could mourn October 7 victims while acknowledging the power imbalance between Israelis and Palestinians. Anti-Defamation League CEO Jonathan Greenblatt accused Mamdani of using the anniversary to repeat anti-Zionist arguments, while Israeli officials also condemned his remarks. Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, who has accused Mamdani of antisemitism, recently said "many Jews no longer feel safe in New York" and accused the mayor of "inverting victim and aggressor”.
