Four tips to get you moving again this spring. To help you get back on track, fitness, wellness and nutrition expert Penny Weston, who runs the Moddershall Oaks health spa and the wellness centre, MADE, has shared her top tips. Slower exercises If you are just starting out or getting back into fitness, start slowly to avoid injury and build up your confidence. ”If you are low on motivation, slower exercises may be a good option for you. Life has become more stressful, fast-paced and all-consuming and I think people look to slower exercises to switch off and relax.” Home workout Going to the gym or working out in a public place can be intimidating and expensive, so why not do it at home? "You do not always have to go to the gym to achieve a good workout. You can get a really good workout at home just using your own body weight…”, the expert explains, noting that you can use household items such as water bottles as weights to make it harder. Working out with a friend Turning workouts into social activities makes the experience more positive and motivating while friendly competition can encourage you to push yourself further. ”Keeping exercise fun and consistent is key: for many people, making it a part of your social life is the way to achieve this.” "Often, we are subconsciously looking for an excuse not to do a workout and will find plenty of other things to do instead, but if you know you've scheduled it with a friend you are more likely to attend as you do not want to let them down.” Have a workout plan Going into a workout without a plan can mean you spend too much time deciding what to do and not enough time actually exercising. ”If you are heading to the gym, have your workout planned in advance, so you know where you are heading when you get there.” "I would also have a backup workout ready, so you are not thrown off if the equipment you need isn't free."
