The move follows growing criticism of Infantino's leadership after his failed proposal to sell stakes in the World Cup to private investors. Wales became the first national association to officially withdraw its backing, saying Infantino had lost its confidence over governance and leadership failures. Prime Minister Andy Burnham said Infantino was "not the right man to lead football" and insisted the abandoned World Cup stake sale plan could not simply be forgotten. The English FA has called for a "full and robust review" of FIFA's leadership and governance and is expected to formally notify FIFA of its decision. FIFA abandoned plans to create a $20 billion subsidiary and sell more than 20% of it after widespread opposition from football bodies and senior officials. Infantino’s senior adviser, Carlos Cordeiro, resigned over the proposal, calling it "a bad deal for football" before FIFA dropped the plans. More European football associations are expected to follow Wales in withdrawing support as pressure grows on Infantino ahead of the 2027 FIFA presidential election.
