Uganda Withdraws From Prince Harry’s Invictus Games After Royal Status Dispute. Uganda has withdrawn from the Invictus Games, just weeks after becoming the first East African country to join the community founded by Prince Harry. The decision was announced by General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Uganda’s military chief and son of President Yoweri Museveni, who criticised what he described as the “Harry-Meghan nonsense”. Kainerugaba said Uganda did not want to be associated with events that lacked the approval of the British monarchy, stressing his loyalty to King Charles III. His comments came after Buckingham Palace formally reaffirmed that Harry and Meghan are no longer working royals and cannot use their HRH titles, despite recently returning to live in Britain. The Ugandan military chief also criticised people within the country’s Ministry of Defence who he said continued to support the Sussexes. The withdrawal represents a sharp reversal from July, when Uganda joined the Invictus community and Harry praised the country as an example of the Games’ international growth. Uganda has traditionally maintained close ties with the British royal family, with Queen Elizabeth II and Charles, then Prince of Wales, having made visits to the country. The Invictus Games organisers had not publicly commented on Uganda’s withdrawal at the time of the report.
