He timed the alleged attack for UnitedHealthcare’s investor conference in Manhattan—calling it a “windfall” moment to expose “everything wrong with our health system.” In his writings, Mangione dismissed bombings as “terrorism”, preferring a method he described as “targeted, precise and doesn’t risk innocents.” Comparing himself to the Unabomber, he argued that indiscriminate violence “makes his ideas those of a monster.” Mangione sought to be seen as a justified actor—not a terrorist. Prosecutors say Mangione had no personal business with UHC but chose them for impact. Shell casings at the scene were marked with the words “delay,” “deny,” “depose”—a clear nod to anti-insurance rhetoric. Despite pleading not guilty, Mangione has gained a cult following. A legal defense fund has raised over $1M, fueled by public outrage over the U.S. health care system. Following the killing, UHC employees reported threats, fear, and resignations. Some doctors asked not to sign denial letters—afraid they might be next.
