Australia Expels Iranian Ambassador Over Alleged Antisemitic Attacks. Australia has ordered Iran’s ambassador Ahmad Sadeghi and three officials to leave within seven days over alleged attacks on Jewish sites. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese linked Iran to an arson attack on a Sydney café in October and a Melbourne synagogue in December. Albanese described the incidents as attempts to “undermine social cohesion and sow discord” in Australia. ASIO chief Mike Burgess said Iran used intermediaries, including criminals, to disguise its involvement in the attacks. Intelligence also suggests Iran may be behind other antisemitic incidents across the country since the Hamas attack on Israel on 7 October 2023. Foreign Minister Penny Wong called the expulsion the first of its kind since World War Two and suspended embassy operations in Tehran. Albanese announced plans to designate Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organisation. Israel’s embassy in Canberra welcomed Australia’s actions, warning Iran poses a threat to Jews, Israel, and the wider free world.
