Supreme Court Clears Path To Drop Bannon Case. The U.S. Supreme Court has cleared the way for the Justice Department to dismiss the criminal case against Steve Bannon. Bannon had been convicted in 2022 for defying a subpoena tied to the January 6 Capitol riot investigation. The decision follows a move by prosecutors under President Donald Trump to drop the case. Bannon had already served a four-month prison sentence in 2024. His legal team argued he acted on advice of counsel and executive privilege claims. Lower courts had rejected that argument, ruling legal advice was not a valid defence. The Justice Department said dismissing the case was now “in the interests of justice”. The ruling is largely symbolic but marks a reversal from the previous administration’s prosecution.
