Judge Allows Charlie Kirk Murder Suspect to Wear Civilian Clothes, But Restraints Stay. The Utah man accused of killing conservative activist Charlie Kirk will be permitted to wear civilian clothes during pretrial hearings, a judge ruled Monday. Judge Tony Graf said the decision was meant to protect Tyler Robinson’s presumption of innocence amid extensive media coverage of the case. However, the judge denied Robinson’s request to appear without restraints, citing the “extraordinarily serious” nature of the charges, which carry potential penalties of life imprisonment or death. The judge also banned media from photographing or recording Robinson’s restraints or capturing him entering or leaving the courtroom. Robinson, 22, appeared remotely from jail with his camera off during the hearing and is next due in court in person on January 16, 2026. He turned himself in a day after Kirk was fatally shot during an outdoor event at Utah Valley University in Orem on September 10. Robinson faces multiple charges, including aggravated murder, obstruction of justice, and witness tampering. Prosecutors have said they plan to seek the death penalty.
