Moon cave “suitable for habitation purposes”, scientists declare. A new study by the journal Nature Astronomy has uncovered a lunar tunnel that can be accessed by astronauts. The surface of the moon is hostile to human life, with temperatures capable of ranging from 127C to -173C. The surface is also vulnerable to meteorite impacts and is exposed to dangerous levels of cosmic radiation, 150 times more powerful than Earth. A newly discovered cave could offer comfortable conditions for a permanent base. Located over 130m below the surface, the 30-80m long and 45m wide cave has an average temperature of 17C creating suitable conditions for astronauts. ”The future exploration of the moon through extended human presence would require protection from the harsh environment and micrometeoroid impacts.” Mahesh Anand/Professor of planetary science and exploration, Open University. ”In that context, these underground structures could provide a suitable location for habitation purposes." Mahesh Anand/Professor of planetary science and exploration, Open University. The "milestone discovery" comes as NASA prepare to revisit the moon for the first time in 50 years, and could serve as a base location.
