Sales Of Radios And Tinned Food Surge After Government Stockpiling Advice. Retailers have reported a surge in sales of essential supplies after the government advised households to prepare for potential emergencies. Iceland said sales of tinned products jumped 40% over the weekend following Defence Secretary Wes Streeting's call for people to stock up in case of events such as cyber attacks or extreme weather. Robert Dyas reported a 160% increase in radio sales compared with the previous week. Maplin said sales of radios rose 92%, while power bank sales more than doubled and torch sales increased by 284% following the government's announcement. Maplin managing director Ollie Marshall said people had quickly turned to basic emergency products, including torches, wind-up radios and power banks. He said the figures suggested households were taking the government's preparedness advice seriously.
