Ed Davey Boycotts Trump’s State Banquet. Sir Ed Davey, leader of the Liberal Democrats, will not attend next month’s royal banquet for U.S. President Donald Trump. Davey cites the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza as his reason, urging Trump to act on Israel and Gulf states. The state visit, from September 17–19, features a banquet at Windsor Castle hosted by King Charles and Queen Camilla. Davey attended the recent banquet for President Macron but says honoring Trump without addressing Gaza is a missed opportunity. Trump has backed Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu during the conflict in Gaza and only recently acknowledged the hunger crisis. Israel denies restricting aid, but the UN calls the famine "man-made." Gaza reports over 62,800 deaths since 7 October 2023. Davey’s boycott was criticised by Dame Priti Patel as disrespectful to the King and UK-US ties. This is Trump’s second UK state visit. Like in 2019, some senior UK politicians are declining invitations. Trump will receive a full ceremonial welcome, but won’t address Parliament due to the Commons recess.
