Headline: 1949 Rolls-Royce Engine That Powered WWII Planes Heads To Auction
Caption:
A legendary engine that powered Spitfire planes during WWII is heading to auction. The renowned Merlin engine is eternally linked with the iconic aircraft it propelled during the Second World War including the Spitfire, Hurricane, Mustang, and Lancaster. The 27-litre V12 engine, originally crafted in 1949, was adapted for nearly 40 different aircraft and even tanks and Motor Torpedo Boats. Acquired in 2017 for museum display, it has since been expertly rebuilt, preserving it in near factory-fresh condition. Mounted on a custom trailer, the 'ground-runner' Merlin engine is ready for display or operation, complete with a Hamilton propeller and a comprehensive set of original manuals. The fortunate buyer will join distinguished company, including serial car collector Jay Leno, who owns a similar setup. The beautifully restored engine will be auctioned by Iconic Auctioneers at the Silverstone Festival on August 24th, estimated at £40,000 - £50,000.
