A luxury yacht named Bayesian sank off the coast of Sicily during a severe storm, leaving one person dead and six others missing, according to Italian authorities. The incident occurred near Porticello, east of Palermo, with the yacht carrying 22 people on board, including 12 passengers and a crew of 10. The Italian coastguards and firefighters rescued 15 people from the vessel, including a one-year-old child. Specialist divers are searching for the missing, who include four Britons, two Americans, and one Canadian.
The yacht sank at approximately 5:00 am local time after being caught in the storm, with efforts ongoing to reach the wreckage lying 49 meters underwater. Eight of those rescued were taken to hospitals and are in stable condition. The Bayesian was a 56-meter luxury sailing yacht with an aluminum hull capable of reaching speeds up to 15 knots. The yacht had departed from Milazzo, Sicily, on 14 August and was last recorded anchored east of Palermo on Sunday evening. Local media reports suggest a waterspout may have struck the vessel, contributing to the incident. The public prosecutor's office in Termini Imerese has launched an investigation into the sinking .
