Study Reveals Rising Dementia Mortality Rates. A new study in The Primary Care Companion for CNS Disorders reveals that dementia deaths in the U.S. have tripled over the past 21 years. In 1999, around 150,000 Americans died from dementia, a number that soared to over 450,000 by 2020. Dr. Mohsan Ali from King Edward Medical University highlights that dementia-related deaths have increased across all demographics, likely due to longer life spans and earlier diagnoses. Dementia, as defined by the National Institute on Aging, involves significant cognitive and behavioral decline. Factors like aging, chronic conditions, and lack of healthcare access, especially in rural areas, contribute to this rise. Women, Black adults, and rural residents experienced the sharpest increase in dementia-related deaths.
