UK to Tighten Family Rules for Asylum Seekers. Home Secretary Yvette Cooper is set to tighten the rules for migrants granted asylum who want to bring family members to the UK. The new criteria are expected to include stronger English language requirements and proof of sufficient funds, alongside reforms to the asylum appeals process. Cooper will argue that current UK policies are out of step with European standards and that the changes aim to prevent misuse of the system including the controversial use of hotels to house migrants arriving on small boats. She will also highlight record-breaking efforts by the National Crime Agency, which disrupted 347 people-smuggling networks in 2024-25, a 40% rise from the previous year. So far this year, over 28,000 migrants have reached the UK in small boats, with more than 50,000 arriving since Labour took office in July 2024.
