Belgium Plans to Recognize Palestine and Sanction Israel. Belgium has announced it will recognize the state of Palestine and impose sanctions on Israel, Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot confirmed - Acordding to Politico. The recognition will only take effect if Hamas releases all remaining Israeli hostages and no longer plays any role in governing Palestine. In the meantime, Belgium will move forward with sanctions, including banning imports from illegal Israeli settlements, restricting business contracts with Israeli firms, and limiting consular support for Belgians living in those settlements. Prévot also said extremist Israeli ministers, violent settlers, and Hamas leaders would be declared persona non grata in Belgium. He stressed the move is not against the Israeli people, but to push the government toward respecting international and humanitarian law. Belgium joins a growing number of Western nations preparing to recognize Palestine at the upcoming U.N. General Assembly in New York.
