Stem Cell Treatment Could Slow Aging and Treat Diseases, Experts Say. A new stem cell treatment could slow aging, prevent diseases like cardiovascular issues, and treat autoimmune conditions, with no known side effects, Newsweek reports. Professor Katarina le Blanc, a leading stem cell researcher at the Karolinska Institutet, says her team's work with mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) has drawn global attention. Chronic inflammation is linked to diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and aging. The MSC treatment may reduce these risks by regulating the immune system. These stem cells release an anti-inflammatory signal that tells the body to stay in a "safe" state, reducing harmful immune responses. MSCs do not last long in the body, but their signals endure for up to three months, promoting anti-inflammatory effects. Concerns over tumors and tissue formation have been dismissed, as MSCs die quickly, leaving only beneficial signals behind. MSC therapy has historically been expensive, limiting its widespread application, but advances in stem cell production may soon make it more affordable. Founded in 2021, Cellcolabs aims to produce stem cells on an industrial scale, potentially revolutionizing healthcare. While 50% of patients respond well to MSC therapy, the other half do not, leading researchers to explore why some patients benefit more than others. If made more accessible, stem cell therapy could become a standard treatment for a wide range of diseases, offering hope for longer, healthier lives.
