Trump asks Supreme Court to uphold controversial tariffs. Former US President Donald Trump has turned to the Supreme Court to challenge a lower court ruling that deemed many of his tariffs illegal. The petition, filed Wednesday, asks justices to quickly confirm the president’s authority to impose import taxes on foreign nations. Last week, a divided US Court of Appeals ruled 7-4 that the tariffs, enacted under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act exceeded Trump’s powers and were instead a “core Congressional responsibility”. The decision could force the government to return billions in collected tariffs, affecting both economic and foreign policy. Trump had argued the measures were necessary to address trade imbalances threatening US manufacturing and national security. While the appellate court ruled against him, it delayed enforcement giving the administration time to appeal to the Supreme Court.
