Malibu Fire Forces Thousands to Evacuate as Blaze Grows to 3,000 Acres. A brush fire, dubbed the Franklin Fire, erupted in Malibu Canyon on Monday evening, rapidly spreading to over 3,000 acres with 0% containment, ABC News reports. Mandatory evacuation orders have been issued for parts of Southern California as officials combat the fire's "rapid rate of spread.” Approximately 1,500 firefighters are battling the blaze, facing challenging terrain and dangerous Santa Ana winds expected to persist through Wednesday. Seven structures have been destroyed, and eight others damaged, while around 20,000 residents remain under evacuation orders or warnings. Power outages and disruptions to cell and internet services have affected a large portion of the area surrounding the fire. The fire, initially estimated at just 10 acres, grew quickly due to dry brush and strong winds, highlighting the potential for further rapid expansion. Los Angeles County Fire Chief Anthony Marrone announced an investigation into the fire’s cause, with arson being considered as a possible factor. Evacuations are in place for areas east of Malibu Canyon Road and south of Piuma Road, including the Serra Retreat neighborhood. Pepperdine University, located near the fire, canceled classes and finals on Tuesday, with students sheltering in place as flames remained visible overnight. Despite the extensive damage, there have been no reports of injuries, and authorities continue to work tirelessly to contain the fire.
