FDA Approves Updated Covid-19 Vaccines for High-Risk Groups. The US FDA has approved updated Covid-19 vaccines, but only for a limited group: adults over 65 and younger individuals at higher risk from the virus. Moderna, Pfizer, and Novavax vaccines are now available for those who consult with their doctors. The updated shots target the latest circulating coronavirus strains. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. emphasized keeping vaccines accessible for the vulnerable though many who previously could get vaccinated, including infants and young children, may now face restrictions. Last season, Covid-19 hospitalizations among children under five were nearly seven times higher than for older children. Emergency use authorizations have been rescinded, meaning Pfizer’s vaccine is no longer authorized for children under five. Moderna’s Spikevax can be given to children six months and older, but only if they have underlying health conditions while Novavax remains limited to high-risk groups.
