Thai Princess Bajrakitiyabha Dies at 47 After Nearly Four Years in Coma. Thailand’s Princess Bajrakitiyabha Narendira Debyavati has died at the age of 47 after nearly four years in a coma following a sudden collapse in December 2022, the royal palace announced. She was the eldest daughter of King Maha Vajiralongkorn and was widely regarded as one of the most prominent members of the Thai royal family. Princess ‘Bha’, as she was affectionately known, served as a diplomat, legal expert and advocate for social justice. Educated in Thailand and the United States, she worked in the attorney-general's office, served as Thailand's ambassador in Europe, and later became a goodwill ambassador. The princess was also known for championing the rights of female prisoners through initiatives aimed at improving conditions and rehabilitation opportunities. Her health deteriorated after suffering a heart-related collapse while training her dogs, with subsequent infections and organ complications leaving her hospitalised and unconscious for years. Her death has renewed attention on questions surrounding Thailand's royal succession, as she had long been viewed by many observers as a possible future heir or regent. Funeral rites will be held with full royal honours, while tributes have highlighted her public service, legal career and efforts to modernise the image of Thailand's monarchy.
