UN Warns of 46,000 Displaced as Yemen Fighting Escalates. At least 46,000 people have been displaced in Yemen since last week as fighting has intensified, according to the UN’s International Organization for Migration (IOM). The IOM warned that the number of displaced people is continuing to rise “hour by hour” as the conflict spreads. Most of the displacement has been recorded in the western governorates of Hodeidah and Taiz, while people are also arriving in Lahj, Aden and Ibb. The UN agency said entire villages in parts of Taiz province have been emptied as fighting approaches populated areas. The escalation comes as Houthi rebels, who are backed by Iran, advance along Yemen’s Red Sea coast towards the strategically important island of Mayun. A key supply route between the port city of Mocha and Taiz has also reportedly been cut off, further restricting access to communities affected by the fighting. The IOM said humanitarian organisations are finding it increasingly difficult to reach people in need as the conflict expands and called for safe and unhindered access. The agency also urged all sides to protect civilians, humanitarian workers and the supplies, vehicles and facilities needed to deliver assistance.
